Georgie was diagnosed with Osteocarcoma. I decided to have the leg amputated. He had his surgery today and came thru just fine - 3 hours later he went into cardiac arrest. My wonderful vet attempted CPR but Georgie probably saw how beautiful the bridge was and decided to stay. Plus I'm sure he thought as long as Nessie aka The Beast was not there he might get some peace and quiet! Georgie disliked his sister so! She was the only one that could bring out the Cujo in him! Georgie was the last of my original greyhounds that I adopted from AAGI - he was so shy. When I brought him home and he walked into the house the first thing he did was stand in the hallway and pee and pee and pee and pee! After he was done with that he made himself comfortable on my queen size bed. I could not approach him without him jumping off the bed and keeping his distance from me. I worked for 6 months to earn his trust. It came one night with peanut butter on my finger and me being a statute in my recliner - I literally did not move nor did I look at him. He slowly approached and licked the peanut butter from my hand and that was the beginning of our bond. Georgie had trust issues and I often had to tell my friends that came over to hide so Georgie would not see them and then and only then would he make his way out or in from the doggie door. He eventually and slowly learned to trust my closest friends and he would often come out to say hello. I will miss seeing him when I walk in the door and see his play bow stance and hearing his "yeah your home" bark. I will miss looking at my bed and not seeing him stretched out across the bed. I will miss seeing him standing behind the rest of the pack waiting patiently for his treat. I will miss hearing him groan while getting ear scritches. (His Auntie Amanda did them the best) I will miss calling out his name. I will and do miss him deeply. I love you Georgie. until we meet again. It will be this Saturday 9/12/09 from 10am-1pm at Phoenix Greyhound Park. Please bring your own towel to help AAGI with the washing after and only greyhounds please. We have opened an area that we are calling Gently Loved Greyhound Merchandise. If you have something greyhound that you need to get rid of you can donate it to this area and all proceeds go back to the greyhounds up for adoption. You might also find something that you can not live without. We are also collecting old cell phones and printer ink cartridges. Of course to have your hound's ears cleaned and a bath it is $5 and the nail trim is $5. We have the punch cards for the nail trim and the 6th one is free. It should be a great weekend for the baths and this will be the last one this year. Hope to see you all there. Sharon Arizona Adopt a Greyhound, Inc. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion." Author Unknown Dear AAGI Volunteers and Friends - It was with great sadness that we received notice today that Phoenix Greyhound Park (PGP) will be closing live racing on December 31, 2009. And I wanted to pass along the facts before the internet gets completely clogged with rumors. What does this mean for AAGI? For the next three months we will continue as we have. We will be working with the racing kennels to move as many dogs as possible through our program as quickly as we can. PGP is committed to helping us place all of the dogs - but it is a process not an overnight event. After the end of the year AAGI will continue placing dogs until they are done - I don't know if that will be 3 months or 6 months - but again PGP is committed to helping us. I obviously don't have the logistics worked out yet so I can't answer specific questions about how many or how we will do it. What can we do to help? For now continue with the wonderful support you have always given. Those of you involved in PR duties are more important than ever as we get the word out about what great pets these elegant dogs make. Please continue with your PetsMarts, PetCos, PGP, and other events that are scheduled. Anyone that can foster please let me know - as things get tighter we may need more foster homes to put dogs in. We will be letting you know how to continue with PR events past the end of the year but I am guessing we will continue for some months at least. What about after all the PGP dogs are placed? I don't know - I would like to think we will continue placing dogs on some smaller scale. As we answer this question we will keep you posted. At the very least we will be available to take in any returning dogs. What about the picnic - and Golf Tournament? Yes and yes - both of those events will continue and the fundraising is more important than ever to help us care for the extra dogs. Is there any hope this will change? YES - the facility will remain on the hope that the state legislators will realize come spring (March/April when they go back to session) that no money fairy has dropped gold into the state coffers and that more cuts to state services like education, police, fire are going to be necessary. Having slot machines at the race track that would generate cash flow (45% of the take) could be a viable option and one that is better than a tax increase. If they allow slots, live racing will return. PGP has long been a model of how race tracks should interact with adoption and in this very difficult time they are doing their best for all concerned. By announcing the closing now they give the kennel people, track employees and us 3 months lead time to work through the issues. I am grateful that they didn't just close the doors as other race tracks have done. We will keep you informed as we know more - Always in service to the hounds, Kari kari@arizonaadoptagreyhound.org From ljn11 at earthlink.net Mon Sep 28 20:21:06 2009 From: ljn11 at earthlink.net (Linda Nelson) Date: Mon Sep 28 20:25:05 2009 Subject: [AZgreys] Greyhound Quilt Raffle benefitting GPA-AZ Message-ID: <15611877.1254194466914.JavaMail.root@mswamui-bichon.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Dear Greyhound Owners, One of our adopters, Kathleen Schott of Chino Valley, has generously made and donated to GPA-AZ a beautiful Greyhound Quilt.
